Each project responds to a specific need identified across Almahue — water, protection, forest creation or long-term monitoring.

Projects can be supported by one partner or collectively through several contributions.

01 Water

Keep water in the landscape for longer. Slow runoff, improve infiltration and create local water-retention capacity. Possible actions include infiltration channels, ponds and small dams adapted to the terrain.

Where does your money go? A real example

The 3.2 km of channels built at Almahue in May–June 2026 cost USD 8,883.

  • 44% preparation (USD 3,938): soil analysis down to 80 cm — in sand, water does not stay — choice of locations and supervision of the work.
  • 56% bulldozer (USD 4,945): earthworks and transport.

That is about USD 2,776 per km. We show USD 2,980 per km to cover transport paid separately and the 3–4% research contribution.

02 Native Mini-Forests

Create new forests where they are needed. Plant mixed forests adapted to local conditions, primarily using native species such as Patagonian Cypress and Ñire. Approximately 400 young trees per hectare.

Replacement of up to 15% of young trees is included.

Where does your money go? What the price includes
  1. Seed collection and cleaning.
  2. Young trees, usually 2 years old: USD 1 to 1.80 each, depending on the species (native trees cost more).
  3. Planting: USD 1.20 to 1.80 per tree, depending on the location, working conditions and type of plant.
  4. Watering the young trees: 8 to 14 times a year, mostly in summer, depending on the climate.
  5. Infrastructure: water tanks, plus handling and refilling.
  6. Replanting of up to 15% of trees that do not survive.

03 Restoration & Protection

Give nature room to recover. Protect areas of natural regeneration, native vegetation and young trees while improving land and livestock management.

Where does your money go? What the price includes
  • 63% materials: posts, 7 wires, strainers and fittings.
  • 37% installation of the fence.

Prices include an extra 10% because Almahue is remote and the ground is very stony.

04 Research & Monitoring

Research and monitoring help us understand what works, where and under which conditions. We test species and planting methods, measure survival and regeneration, and improve our decisions based on field results.

We also want to better understand the fauna and flora already present across Almahue, so we can protect habitats and strengthen biodiversity over time.

This includes collaboration with INTA and Patagonian Cypress field trials.

The initial Research & Monitoring program has a higher cost because it establishes the first scientific baseline across Almahue. Future monitoring rounds will be lighter and repeated periodically to measure change over time.

05 Integrated Ecosystem Restoration

Restore an area as a whole. Combine water management, native forest plantation, protection and monitoring within one defined area.
