A patagonian paradise to preserve
The Almahué Valley, an opportunity to reverse the global warming trends even if it’s a very small step in the right direction
“Among the scenes which are deeply impressed on my mind, none exceed in sublimity the primeval forests undefaced by the hands of man; [...] The plains of Patagonia are boundless, for they are scarcely practicable, and hence unknown: they bear the stamp of having thus lasted for ages, and there appears no limit to their duration through future time.”
— Charles Darwin, Voyage of the Beagle
Characteristics of this Patagonian valley in Argentina
The project is located in the north of the Rio Negro province (Patagonia) in Argentina, bordering the Alicura lake/basin, north of Bariloche, a small town with 125,000 inhabitants.
The region has a hot, humid subtropical climate with an average temperature of 14.8°C, scarce precipitation (250-600 mm), and infrequent summer rain. Daytime
temperatures can reach over 30°C, while nighttime temperatures can drop to 1°C.
The soils are ancient, covered with stones and volcanic ashes (allophane), generating young fertile soils with the presence of numerous minerals such as phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and magnesium.
The fauna includes guanacos, pumas, foxes, deer, wild boars, hares, condors, eagles, hawks, and hundreds of insect species.
• Project area : 4300 hectares
• The altitude ranges from 700 to 1200 meters.
I lived and worked in Argentina for many years. I had the opportunity to discover this valley on a tourism trip. I was immediately captivated by the beauty of the place.
It was a revelation! A powerful call. "Here, I have a role to play". So I decided to buy over 4,000 hectares of land to develop an environmental conservation and restoration project.
I have been very impressed and pleased by the great local welcoming, today I spend almost half a year in the camp not only for the beauty of the place but especially for the human quality of the local people…Thank you !
Water scarce
"The lack of water limits the number of species to be planted as well as its viability, especially during the first 2/3 years; even though there is a lake nearby, the possibility of drawing water from it is financially unfeasible.
Difficult access
Logistics: Access is currently via boat across Lake Alicura, and movement within the camp is done on horseback, as no dirt roads are passable to date; the terrain is also rugged and has several canyons that need to be bypassed.
Living away from it all
Living self-sufficiently: Being located quite far from the nearest major city, Bariloche (80 km), we must learn to rely on our own resources (wood, solar energy, spring water, food, etc.)."
Employment
Argentina has suffered a number of economic crises, and isolated regions have been particularly hard hit. With this project, we want to encourage the development of local activities to create jobs and support local communities.
Education
Almahué Forest is a project for future generations. We want to involve children and young people to ensure the sustainability of this project, raise awareness of environmental issues, and turn these challenges into opportunities.
