A sublime valley

“Among the scenes which are deeply impressed on my mind, none exceed in sublimity the primeval forests undefaced by the hands of man; [...] The plains of Patagonia are boundless, for they are scarcely practicable, and hence unknown: they bear the stamp of having thus lasted for ages, and there appears no limit to their duration through future time.”

— Charles Darwin, Voyage of the Beagle

Geographical features

Characteristics of this Patagonian valley in Argentina

Location

The project is located in the north of the Rio Negro province (Patagonia) in Argentina, bordering the Alicura lake/basin, north of Bariloche, a small town with 125,000 inhabitants.

Climate

The region has a hot, humid subtropical climate with an average temperature of 14.8°C, scarce precipitation (250-600 mm), and infrequent summer rain. Daytime

temperatures can reach over 30°C, while nighttime temperatures can drop to 1°C.

Soils

The soils are ancient, covered with stones and volcanic ashes (allophane), generating young fertile soils with the presence of numerous minerals such as phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and magnesium.

Fauna

The fauna includes guanacos, pumas, foxes, deer, wild boars, hares, condors, eagles, hawks, and hundreds of insect species.

Data

• Project area : 4300 hectares

• The altitude ranges from 700 to 1200 meters.

Why here ?

I lived and worked in Argentina for many years. I had the opportunity to discover this valley on a tourism trip. I was immediately captivated by the beauty of the place.

It was a revelation! A powerful call. "Here, I have a role to play". So I decided to buy a land to develop an environmental conservation and restoration project.

I have been very impressed and pleased by the great local welcoming, today I spend almost half a year in the camp not only for the beauty of the place but especially for the human quality of the local people…Thank you !

Environmental & social challenges

The main environmental challenges for the project

Water scarce

We have between 250 and 400 ml of rain per year…BUT we have the El Guanaco stream, a permanent watercourse, as well as several temporary watercourses.

Hydrological restoration with contour lines and infiltration channels is a great opportunity to secure water in Almahue.

We will be able to install Australian tanks to capture water from the streams. The excess water will be returned to the stream, allowing us to irrigate locally and provide water for animals.

We will also protect water sources so they can survive over time.

The challenge of lack of rain can turn into great opportunities.

Difficult access

Logistics is a challenge in Almahue. The access is currently via boat across Lake Alicura, and movement within the camp is done on horseback, but since 2024 we have built a first 12 km path so that for the moment we can have access to the plantation areas and partially to the preservation areas. In 2028/2029 we will build new roads to provide access to the entire territory.

Living away from it all

Living self-sufficiently: being located quite far from the nearest major city, Bariloche (75 km), we must learn to rely on our own resources and carefully plan our purchases.

Social and economic challenges

Employment

Argentina has suffered a number of economic crises, and isolated regions have been particularly hard hit. With this project, we want to encourage the development of local activities to create jobs and support local communities.

Education

Almahué Forest is a project for future generations. We want to involve children and young people to ensure the sustainability of this project, raise awareness of environmental issues, and turn these challenges into opportunities.

Almahue Forest is aiming to increase biodiversity, ecosystem resilience and carbon stock in Patagonia planting + 1 million trees and to rewild by 2049.

Our project in Patagonia will be focused on water, Genetic ressources, forest production, livestock production and carbon.

The Almahue Valley, a natural wonder that has fallen victim to human activity and global warming…we will rewilding it !

Provide more prosperous and harmonious future where the interaction between humans and nature mutually enhances each other.
